Server and Security thoughts

A couple of things

If anyone has an answer to either of these I be grateful if you leave a note here.

the first one came in an email today

“I have a SBS 2003 box all setup and running , and also a Net gear SSL-VPN concentrator , things were working fine meaning mu user in remote locations could connect to the VPN and access the shares, until I started to run the wizards that opened up the Remote Word Space SSL connection, now all my traffic seem to go to the URL on the 2003 server box instead of the SSL VPN URL . I am not sure how to either add a  link on the 2003 web page that can point them to the SSL, or what the best configuration would be ? as all  SSL connections all use port 443 , so I cannot really change the port mappings.”

The other one comes from me, I’ve got a copy of ERD Commander by WinInternals (now Microsoft) but it does not detect my Areca 1220 (SATA) RAID card and I cannot use it’s very powerful password recovery feature.

Matrix

I got to the bottom of what is up with my original server – disk 8 cannot be detected or is somehow missing, the cable may be missing from the drive bay. The give away was that the controller is capable of RAID 6 and though drives 1 to 4 are the same size and detected 5 to 7 was detected and though 8 was their in it’s caddie it was not showing up in BIOS of the card.

This teaches me something importantly – document what you do. You could be looking at it one day, I’m lucky I remember what is in there from an Areca controller to the the type of server it is – Supermicro do some good work. It’ll be nice to figure out what is up with Matrix (the servers name) but at least I know it’s not the servers actual hardware.
